Glad to see you at the 58-th beta round. Problems for today's contest are prepared by Orel STU and NNSU teams.

Good luck everyone!

Unfortunately, statement of problem A was incorrect in English. Russian statement was OK. I'm sorry for this mistake.

Results and ratings were updated.

Thanks for everybody who solve this contest!

there must be some to adjust that ...in ratings...like not rating the first one..and calculating the points for rest of the question , ofcourse reducing the time of contest as well while calculating.

    Lets see what happens.

My solution to problem B was hacked. The test file was like that:

There are so many confusions, in fact...
For example,
"That is, they are comfortable when between any two girl's fingers there is a boy's finger."

I believed that the boy can't put more than one fingers because of this statement...
Maybe it should be "at least one finger"?

I don't see any confusion in this statement. There is no words "only one boy's finger", so except one boy finger there maybe other fingers, even not only that Marsian boy's :)

"when between any two girl's fingers there is a boy's finger"
If there are more than one finger, there is not finger, but fingers. I think in this case number of fingers of the girl should be >= number of fingers of the boy-3. I locked my solution and got hacked, also got -50 pts for unsuccesfull hacking attempt.

Edit. Ok after deeper consideration if there are fingers, then there is also a finger, but it is very confusing.

How come the contest will be rated even with the big mess with problem A? So if I lost 30 minutes looking for challenges they will be ignored and I end up having spent 1/4 of the contest for nothing?
Also, I have a resubmit because of the wrong statement (also lost some time to ask a question), and the people, who used Russian statements don't get punished at all. I really DO NOT think this contest should be rated.
I also realized there are two possible ways to get problem B reading the English statements (of course after locking the problem and having it hacked).
I am sorry the contest was messed up (and for the work of the authors of the problems) but in my opinion a problem like this shouldn't be ignored.

The judge should make sure, the questions are atleast correct.
It should not be *rated*

I have an idea=) Give all people the opportunity to choose whether their rating will be rated or not (although it is difficult to choose a default option - rate or not) and then make new rankings only with the people who want to be rated. After that calculate new ratings based on that performance.

In this way the element of knowing approximately where you would be after sys tests is removed.

I think the decided resolution is the most unfair of all. What are the arguments in favor of ignoring A hacks and rating the round?

I understand the unfairness that comes from those hacks, but it should either be rated or unrated completely.

I myself when read the statement realized it was wrong, it didn't match, but I saw people had submissions. So I thought I must be not getting it, after the clarification solved it correctly, locked it and started hacking. I didn't even read other problems for about 40 minutes, but I thought the round was going to be cancelled or not, never imagined that 40 minutes were going to waste and match was going to be rated anyway.

I even think that submitting and locking a problem, were statement is clearly wrong is the contestants fault. However, I understand how the problem may be considered a reason for unfairness. But I think is completely wrong to rate a part and not the other.

This is just penalizing people who realized that all submissions before clarification had to be wrong because they sent a solution that in no way could comply with the statement. And favoring people who sent solutions that they had to know were at least fishy, no one could have written a solution they thought was correct according to the statement that also solved the last example.

EDIT: I just read the Russian version was correct, don't know if it is true, but that makes it even more unfair. I think it shouldn't be rated completely.

First of all , Just removing points for hacking doesnt , account for all those things that could have happened and that has happened.

REMEMBER "Butterfly Effect" .

or "Chaos Theory" .

So, If you want to rate , plz take "OTHER" things into considerations ...and balance the ratings.

Otherwise don't rate.

After updating the problem(in English) it seemed ok to me. I solved it with pen paper..its about fixing boys fingers and arranging girls fingers or fixing girls fingers and arranging boys fingers....i tried it by taking 4 Boys fingers and then finding the way in which girls fingers can be arranged. Also taking 4 Girls fingers and arranging boys fingers in all the fashion...gives the clue for solving this problem.

All results of hacks of problem A will be annuled. You do not take you +100/-50 points for each hack of this problem.

If one chooses to have the round rated for them, on what basis will the new rating be calculated? I mean, will it take into account the performance of all contestants, or just the ones who have also agreed to be rated? In the latter case, the rating can be quite skewed/random, because there will be no poor performers in the group of people who agree to be rated. So I think the first case is the way to go.

How can we know if we should want to be rated? ;) Will our possible rating be calculated and presented to us?

Also, if so, why not just raise ratings for exactly those contestants who have the new rating higher than the old one?

  • 13 years ago, # ^ |
Rev. 2   Vote: I like it +1 Vote: I do not like it
I think you shouldn't try to figure out if you should be rated, but whether rating the round is a correct decision. And do it so thinking what is better for Codeforces and not yourself.

Not rating a contest is bit sad, but the rankings remain true and unbiased.

Rating an unfair round introduces a big bias on the ranking and has an impact on how Codeforces is perceived. I'm sure most people here think TopCoder rankings can be trusted, to some degree. Also, I think that is because they cancel matches where real unfairness is found.

If unfair rounds go into the ranking, then the bias may be so big that there is no point to see that ranking. So I think when voting you should consider what's best for Codeforces and not yourselves.

EDIT: missed a *not*, had written "yourself" but I meant "not yourself".
    • 13 years ago, # ^ |

I think it's up to the organizers to decide. If I were them, I would make the round unrated without any hesitation (and announce that 15 minutes into the contest, as soon as it became apparent that all hell is going to break loose with the hacking and what not).

However, if the organizers decide that the round will be half-rated, I don't expect many people to choose to have their rating lower, yet unbiased.

      • 13 years ago, # ^ |
Vote: I like it 0 Vote: I do not like it
I agree they should have cancelled the round when they saw the hacking madness.

And probably you are right about people not deciding to lower their ranking, but I prefer to have had a practice session (unrated round) which keeps the ranking unbiased over increasing rating in a ranking that means nothing.

Vote: I like it 0 Vote: I do not like it
I apologize, I didn't really understood they half-rated decision before. I understood it as voting would decide whether round was going to be cancelled or not.

This way of course, no one will ask to have rating lowered.

Hmm..., I rate this site as high as TopCoder , So I guess, making it totally unrated would be good descision.

Because, allowing people to choose to be rated, seems little odd

and little uneasy when the reputation of this site comes in mind.

Not rating this will not affect anything, we will say just a bad day...

People who submitted problem A earlier had taken a risk. Test case 3 should have warned them. How could you submit without understanding the problem statement? So it was fair and I think this contest should be rated. Also everyone had a chance to hack other solutions in their room.

Then one can calculate his rating by the given formula in one of the topics here and vote yes if the difference  is positive. That's not the case for a contest's rating:)

            I think the same thing.
If all participants take this strategy, ratings are only increased in this round. This means that average of ratings is increased. It can be considered that ratings of who are not participated in this round are relatively decreased. I think that this is also unfair.

Come on guys. How much does this rating worth? What would you get if you have a rating of 50 points higher?
Everything will become normal and fair just after the next contest.
There was a mistake in one statement and now you are looking for the completely fair way of updating a rating which won't change anything.
Our ratings do not describe us, this is not important enough for wasting so much time and thought on it.

"The Confirm button just for agreeing of applying this changes."

It's impossible because rating sum of all participants before contest and after contest must be equal

If it was possible to ignore all hacks by A (-550 my pts.), it's possible to change ratings in way that I said.

What does distributed mean ? Calculated for all 1200 and distributed to those who voted "yes" ?

The ratings should be calculated considering all contest participants and only be distributed to those who want to be rated. Else, this would be unfair to the people who have not done well but have shown the spirit and want to be rated.
If this is not possible, the contest better be unrated for all.

Wait. I don't get it. Will the rating be calculated on basis of scores of all 1200 participants and applied to only those who voted "YES" or will it be calculated only taking into account those scores who voted "YES" ? In the second case, this is so wrong. Its almost sure disaster for all except the very top ranks and its totally random. Please calculate on basis of all 1200 participants and apply it to those who voted "YES" .. this approach only makes sense.

I think rated this contest is ok. Besides problem A, there are four more problems waiting for you to solve. Moreover, the score of problem A is the least one and it's the most easy problem. Why be so serious on a piece of cake? Although hacking is interesting, to the respect to the problem provider, I think solving problem is more important. Good night.

unfortunately, most of people can't solve anything excepts A and B problems, and A for them is really costly "piece of cake" =/

Hope that Codeforces admins will hear our calling for this message.
It was nowhere told about that rule. :(

Even if we need to wait results till the start of registration to CFBR#59(Div.2).
It would be more fair.

I think the English problem statements should be shorter and more concise. It took me lots of time to understand some problem statements in recent contests, given that the English translation is not really good.

I'm sorry for all non-russian participants

but you should understand that Codeforces is a russian project and some problem authors have extremely big troubles with english language

we are trying to make english statements are equal to russian but some bugs are inevitable, so we asks you to be more tolerancy

I believe the situation with english statements will improve with every new contest

I don't think it's fair to decide blindly whether it should be rated or not. Clearly, top coders will vote yes and bottom coders will vote no. Being in the middle of the standings table, I really don't know what to do. It is like participating on a contest without knowing who the registrants are, how many registrants are there, and not having a scoreboard up until the end of the contest....

Why my code, which is hacked, get AC in the practice Room?

I would guess that the system tests didn't have a case that broke your bug, or if you are using C/C++ you may have some memory problem (like going out an array) which causes undefined behavior and doesn't always break.

    Those are just guesses though.
